I've never made it a secret that I really like MS products, but today has left me wondering.

First off, when I say I like MS products I'll point out that I've been through 5 new Xbox 360's with rrod. My eldest son now has my old Halo Reach special edition one as I've moved on to the Xbox One. I also had the original Xbox (or 'prime' as they are calling it with confusion of the new One).

My household has a laptop running Windows 7, 2 Windows phones (they ARE good. Shoosh at the back), and the Surface 2. I do not own anything Apple.

The Surface is the issue here. I bought it and the keyboard last June - less than 1 year ago. The battery is now goosed - the unit doesn't know it exists.

I contacted MS and initially they were great. I sent it away, but 2 weeks later I got it back saying they can't repair it as they say someone tried to open it. Bull.

I wouldn't know how to open it or what to do. It's under warranty, so why would I?

I called them again and mentioned this, and they asked me to send them images of the unit. Done there and then. 1 week passes with no reply so I called contacted them via web chat to enquire.

Apparently they are not fixing it as the slight bend in the kick stand invalidates the warranty. What??

This happened 2 months after purchase and is a hinged plate of metal that has NOTHING to do with the operation of the unit. I asked Dean (the customer relations guy) if a dent in a car wing would invalidate a warranty on a car. His reply was "I don't know, I'm not a car salesman". Well guess what. I AM! And no, this would not invalidate the warranty on a car.

Furious. Furious to the point I want to swap my One for a PS4.
Furious to the point I want to swap all my MS products for Apple.
Furious that the company I've defended to the hilt to my friends has brushed me off with no help on such a ridiculous claim.

    Sorry for the rant. Gutted.

Sucks that they would turn their back on you an obvious customer. Kind of makes you think "Sorry it's broken, but I've got your money and no longer need you... unless of course you want to buy something else from us". Sucks either way.

I've been back to the retailer I got it from with a letter from a professional computer repair company that states the bend can in no way affect the running of the unit. They say they'll handle the complaint. MS can't even agree why they'll not fix it, so I have little faith in them now...

I've grown to despise customer care. I'm not old enough to hit the road but i'm old enough to handle all calls my family makes to customer service....
Each call I make can be found length-wise into this little expression I made:
For each minute of helpful advice, times by 3 to get the number of minutes waited/put on hold. Each call is usually 1-2 hours long....

Don't do it,at least for that reason. They are all the same. The only way out is to spend the money on a no questions asked guarentee. Good luck.

The trouble I have is that I possess a strong moralistic sense of right and wrong!
If this fault had been caused by a drop or spill then I wouldn't bother trying, however that little bend in the stand happened about 6 months before the battery stopped working. I'll be damned if they get away with this!!

Keep bugging them until they get bored. Find a friend who works for MS who might have some inside track, and keep going higher up. Talk again with customer service. Just keep probing in every out of the box way you can think of. Ultimately you will win. But at what cost. Just think that those are hours you could be playing TF. This is why you pick and choose your battles. It is a hard pill to swallow to let some things go. I to share your sense of justice. I get it. Patience is some times the answer too. A la "revenge is a meal best served cold". Good luck my friend.

I love this, and completely agree with you. Some "companies" are not worth the trouble.

I've had people from companies with pull treat me like I'm a worthless nobody, and these companies offer genuinely good services for money, but it seems the people who run them, or work at the top of the ladder, are just not nice people. I waste no time on them, and because of the bad relationship, I point no one, either people or other companies, in their direction. Since I will get no justice from society, I exert my own style of karmic justice.

Every company starts out nice, they are the corporate "nobodies", they make money off a bespoke business idea, or maybe they can just offer a better service to their target audience than the industry leaders, they gain power, start to let standards slip, and some younger talent rolls in, exercising the same tactics they once employed.

You're right Bruvas, it IS wrong, but broken bonds of trust between companies and consumers causes the latter to look elsewhere. That's one benefit of adopting capitalism, if nothing else.

Amen, brother. Apple dude since '84. Just wish they would get into gaming in a big way. Then I wouldn't have to deal with so many Xbox One resets.

Just as an update, they took the old 32gb Surface 2 away, and we now have a 64gb Surface 3 instead. All's well that ends well!
